Number Tagged Spam

NEWSLETTER: MAY 2025

Have you noticed more customers ignoring your calls lately? Maybe their caller ID warns "Spam Likely," and suddenly, your calls go unanswered.

Unfortunately,  scammers now routinely hijack legitimate phone numbers—like yours—to  flood phones with robocalls. When that happens, your number unfairly  lands on spam lists.

Why does this happen?

Mobile  providers rely on automated systems from companies like Hiya, First  Orion, and TNS. These systems flag numbers when they detect sudden  bursts of short calls, high call volume, or customer spam reports. Even a  brief spike in unusual calling activity can trigger the dreaded "spam"  label.

Can this be fixed?

Absolutely—but  it's important to note this issue isn't related to how your Clarktel  managed phone system operates. Instead, it's caused by scammers and  involves third-party voice carriers who must manually remove your number  from spam lists.

Here's how you get your caller ID clean again:

  • Register your numbers (it’s free) at FreeCallerRegistry.comThis one listing hits AT&T + Verizon + T-Mobile in one shot!

  • If a specific voice carrier has you listed as a spammer, you need to  contact them directly to start the process of being de-listed.

  • If it wasn't a "spoofer" using your phone number illegally that got  you listed, then improve your dialing practices: avoid repeated call  attempts after voicemail, honor opt-out requests quickly, and keep  abandoned calls under 3%.

  • If a carrier still tags you as spam after three days, immediately submit a dispute ticket.

Unfortunately,  every carrier’s de-listing process is a bit different and many make it  difficult to understand how to start the process. To try to make it  easier, Clarktel is beginning to collect some of those carrier processes  now for a future FAQ posting to our website.

If you find you do need our help with this, you can contact us to open a support ticket.

Clarktel will  assign a team member to secure the details from you and navigate the  carrier de-listing process. During the process, we’ll keep in touch with  you about our progress; tracking our efforts against a support ticket  that invoices you only when your number has been de-listed.

If you find you do need our help, call 330-572-4853 or Email anytime: service@clarktel.net.

Look for a future newsletter update or email blast once we publish the self-help de-listing instructions we are now compiling.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine put E911/NG911 compliance back in the spotlight just a few weeks ago. Existing federal regulations under Kari's Law and the RAY BAUM’s Act are reshaping how businesses must handle emergency 911 calls—to make it  easier for first responders to more quickly save and protect lives. For  more information about both laws, be sure to review the FCC’s public fact sheet

These rules require all multi-line telephone systems (MLTS) to:

  • Provide direct 911 dialing without any prefix (Kari’s Law)

  • Share dispatchable location data such as floor and room number (RAY BAUM’s Act)

Many of NEC’s  modern premise systems can still meet these requirements -- even with  their market exit last year -- but not all systems are upgradeable.  Here’s how to know where your system stands:

✅ Fully Upgradeable Systems (NG911 Ready)

These systems are compliant capable or can be upgraded to deliver dispatchable location data:

  • SL2100

  • UNIVERGE SV9100 (with CP20 processor)

  • UNIVERGE SV9300

  • UNIVERGE SV9500

  • UNIVERGE 3C

What’s required:

  • Latest system software (requires active Software Assurance in some cases)

  • SIP trunking (Clarktel can provide certified hardware + SIP Voice service)

Important: You are on the clock — NEC has only committed to extending the hardware and licensing needed for NG911 compliance until December 31, 2025. Failure to upgrade by then may leave your system permanently non-compliant.

❌ Legacy Systems – NOT Upgradeable

These systems are not compliant and cannot be upgraded to meet NG911 standards:

  • SV8100 / SV8300 / SV8500

  • SL1100

  • IPK, IPK II, and earlier NEC platforms

If you’re still using one of these systems, your only path to compliance is migration.

Clarktel offers two future-ready solutions:

  1.  ELEVATE UC – Cloud-Based NG911-Compliant Phone Service

  • Fully managed and scalable

  • Native NG911 support built-in
